ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University Athletics Department continues to thrive academically in the Academic Progress Rate (APR), as released by the NCAA today.
13 of the Bobcats’ 16 sports have multi-year APR rates of 970 or above. Six teams, field hockey, wrestling, women’s basketball, softball, indoor and outdoor track, posted their best multi-year score since the APR began in 2004-05. In all, 13 of Ohio’s 16 sports posted scores equal to or better than a year ago.
The field hockey, wrestling and volleyball programs at Ohio each have the highest APR scores in the Mid-American Conference for their respective sports. None of Ohio’s 16 teams face any penalty for low or substandard APR scores.
“Our APR scores continue to demonstrate the academic excellence of our teams at Ohio University," Senior Associate AD for Compliance Tricia Turley Brandenburg said. "This is a credit to our NCAA Eligibility & Student-Athlete Success staff, coaches and student-athletes. Ohio University continues to be an institution where student-athletes are able to excel as a person, student and athlete.”
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 academic years. The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
