ATHENS, Ohio - With Ohio University's undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 9 drawing the academic careers of many to a close, Ohio athletics has announced that 53 student-athletes officially completed their degrees in the Spring Quarter.

More than 3,000 students were awarded bachelor's degrees during two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 9, in the Convocation Center. Dr. Jennie S. Hwang, president of H-Technologies Group near Cleveland, served as this year's commencement speaker. Dr. Hwang received an honorary degree along with Dr. Thanu Kulachol, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn and Dr. John Light. President Roderick J. McDavis presided over both ceremonies.

The 2007 class of 53 Bobcat student-athletes came from 17-different sports and 17 states, including 25 from the state of Ohio. The group included members of the Mid-American Conference champion volleyball, field hockey and women's cross country teams as well as players from the football squad that captured the program's first-ever MAC East Division title.

"I congratulate each one of these 53 graduates," Ohio Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "Their accomplishments are the result of tremendous focus and balance between classwork and competition. We are extremely proud of these young men and women and the way that they have represented Ohio University."

The Bobcat volleyball squad, which captured its fourth conference title in a row and compiled 118 victories during that span, graduated three seniors. Also among the highlights of the 2006-07 athletic season was the Ohio football team, which included 11 graduates that helped the program to its first bowl appearance since 1968.

The list of graduates includes golf All-American Scholars Grant Christman, Ryan Siekmann, Kristen Mautz and Meredith Waterston and soccer Academic All-District IV honoree Tiffany Horvath. The graduating class also features four Academic All-MAC honorees and 10 All-MAC selections.
