ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio Director of Athletics Jim Schaus announced Thursday that Russ Eisenstein has been named the Bobcats’ Director of Broadcasting.
"Bobcat fans are in for a real treat with the hiring of Russ Eisenstein as our new announcer,” Schaus said. “He has excellent experience, is highly polished and is extremely energetic in his reporting. Russ captures the excitement of the moment and is the right fit to promote Bobcat athletics in the future."
Eisenstein, 28, spent the last year at Idaho State University as the Director of Broadcasting and Sales. In that capacity, he served as the play-by-play voice of ISU Bengal football and basketball on the Bengals Radio Network, while also serving as the host for ISU’s coaches’ shows. While at ISU, Eisenstein totally revamped the broadcasts. He introduced online content at www.isubengals.com in the form of the “Bengal Broadcast Booth” and instituted a daily sportscast for Bengal Athletics, “The Bengal Sports Minute”.
"For a guy who grew up in the Midwest as a MAC fan, this is a wonderful opportunity,” said Eisenstein. “In a relatively short amount of time, I have been very lucky to be in some great situations, and I plan to bring all of that experience to Ohio University. Bobcat fans deserve the best coverage possible, and it's my goal to bring that to them. It truly is an honor to be the "Voice of the Bobcats".
Eisenstein spent the previous two years as the play-by-play man for the Single A Eugene Emeralds (San Diego Padres, Northwest League) and the studio host for the NBA’s New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets.
Eisenstein has ascended through the broadcasting ranks quickly as he was the sixth-youngest play-by-play man in the Football Championship Subdivision last year and one of the youngest NBA studio hosts in recent memory.
In addition to the Emeralds and the Hornets, he has worked for a pair of FCS schools in Illinois State and Southern Illinois. Russ served as the play-by-play voice for Illinois State baseball and the studio host for Illinois State football and men's basketball from 2003-05, and he held the same duties with Southern Illinois from 2001-03. He served as the Salukis women's basketball play-by-play voice for the 1999-2000 season.
Eisenstein also has hosted various radio sport talk programs, including a four-hour sports talk show on WJBC in Bloomington, Illinois for over two years, along with news reporting, play-by-play, weather, and special reports. He also has served as a reporter and anchor for the 40 station metro News Statewide Network in West Virginia. He also has garnered a pair of Illinois Broadcaster Association Awards, and a pair of Illinois Associated Press Association Awards.
Eisenstein also served as the play-by-play voice for Illinois Wesleyan in 2003, and he also brings with him five years of experience doing high school football and basketball play-by-play. However, Eisenstein's biggest splash was his work with the NBA's New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets.
Russ served as the studio host for the pregame, halftime, and postgame shows on the 25 station Hornet Radio Network, and he also hosted the "Final Buzz" postgame show. Eisenstein also saw time on the television side as a host and reporter on "Hornets TV" and "Hornets Insider", and he served as a regular contributor to NBA.com and other NBA outlets.
The technology-savvy Eisenstein originally hails from Bolingbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from Southern Illinois in 2002 with a B.A. is radio and television, and a minor in journalism.
