Support Staff Prepares For Ohio Football Camp

Bobcat TV sat down with John Bowman and Matt Morton to discuss the preparation for training camp.

John Bowman became Ohio's director of athletic training services in July 1997. He is responsible for the medical care of all Bobcat student-athletes, supervising the entire athletic training staff and working daily with the football program.

Bowman is a key part of the Bobcat health care team that works with specific professional organizations like the NCAA Medical Safeguards Committee, the National Athletic Trainers Association and the American College of Sports Medicine. Current broad-based endeavors include use of neuropsychological testing for treatment of concussions, managing and evaluating injury patterns and statistics, eating-disorder recognition and counseling for nutritional supplements.

Bowman aided in the development of the plans for the renovated athletic training facility at Peden Stadium. Finished prior to the start of the 2005 season, the facility covers more than 3,000 square feet of space with three in-ground pools and an underwater treadmill. A new Biodex isokinetic machine is also in place for student-athlete testing and rehabilitation.

A 1987 graduate of Ohio (health education with a minor in athletic training), Bowman spent one season with the NFL's New England Patriots. He then completed his master's degree in education at the University of Virginia in 1989.

From 1989-1994, he served as assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. He returned to his alma mater as an assistant athletic trainer primarily responsible for football.

Bowman and his wife, Lesley, a 1990 graduate of Ohio, have two daughters, Kelsey and Lindsey.
