Ohio University journalism student to serve as website's lead feature reporter
Tom Symonds joined the Ohio University Media Relations office in September of 2011. In his current capacity, Symonds oversees the publicity efforts for the Bobcats' 16 varsity sport programs and serves as the department's spokesman.
He also serves as the primary media relations contact for the Bobcats' football team, while working with the Ohio cross country, wrestling and baseball teams.
Symonds arrived in Athens after spending three years working in The University of Rhode Island sports communications office where he served as the Communications Coordinator, primarily working with the Rams' football squad, while also working with the rowing, softball and volleyball teams.
Prior to coming to Kingston, Symonds worked as the Assistant Director of Communications at the Horizon League, in Indianapolis. There, he served as the League's primary media contact for women's basketball, softball, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball. In addition, he was the media coordinator for the League's women's basketball championship.
During the 2006-07 academic year, Symonds worked as a communications assistant at The Big East Conference office in Providence, R.I. At the Big East, he was the communications contact for baseball, cross country/track and field, and volleyball. He also assisted with publicity for the conference's football and men's basketball programs and helped maintained its official web site.
Before his term at the Big East, he interned with the Detroit Lions media relations office from 2005-06. In addition, he assisted the NFL public relations staff at Super Bowl XL in Detroit in February 2006.
A native of Medina, Ohio, Symonds graduated from the Ohio State University in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in history. He and his wife Jessi were married in July of 2010. The couple resides in Athens, Ohio.
