The football team participated in the Strikes for Spuds Bowling event in Boise on Tuesday December 14th. During the event, the Bobcats raised over 1,400 lbs. of potatoes for the Southeast Ohio Community Food Bank in Logan, Ohio. Photo Gallery | Ohio Football: Bowling in Boise Additionally, on December 17th, two buses of football team members traveled to local hospitals to spend time with patients at Idaho State Veterans and Saint Alphonsus Hospitals. Photo Gallery Additionally, over winter break, members of the softball team volunteered their time to different community service projects in their home towns. Some of these projects included volunteering at the Army Reserve, gift wrapping presents & working at a Christmas cookie drive. Two member of the women’s track & field team – Kristen Mason & Lauren McCullough – drove to New Orleans during winter break & volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to build houses. They dedicated over 40 hours of community service to this great endeavor. Ohio Athletics lent a significant hand in a campus-wide Canned Food Drive hosted by the Exercise Physiology Club. Bobcat teams made a big impact on the charity drive, donating 31% of the overall total. Ohio’s swimming & diving team led the way for the entire university, donating 1,310 items. The field hockey team was the #2 organization on campus with 630 items donated. Other Bobcat teams who donated canned goods for this community service project were the following: women’s cross country, men’s cross country, baseball, volleyball, women’s soccer & women’s basketball. Lastly, the athletic department staff partnered with the Athens County Children Services department in the 2011 Santa Tree Project for the fifth consecutive year. Through this year's project, the athletic department adopted five children in Athens County, who were in need of some extra help during the holiday season. Members from the athletic department brought in gifts ranging from pro wrestler toys, Nerf footballs, clothes, hair accessories and gift cards.
The Rufus Reads Program involves Ohio University student-athletes visiting local elementary schools and spending time reading books to the area kids.
