| Winter Quarter 2012 Community Service|
During winter quarter, a number of student-athletes participated in community service events around the community. A number of members of the football team participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Pancake Breakfast at the local Applebee’s in Athens. The players helped to not only serve pancakes, but also seated attendees, bused tables, and even washed dishes.
Along with this, members of the football team participated in fundraisers for Sexual Assault and the Alzheimer Association at The Red Brick Tavern in Athens. To help raise money for the Sexual Assault Prevention Club, the football players were auctioned off to bidders. Also, football athletes participated to help raise money for the Alzheimer Association at The Red Brick just a few days later.
Some other teams that took to the community during winter quarter were the baseball and field hockey teams. Members of the baseball team at Ohio took part in a reading night at Trimble Elementary in which the whole team took time to read to the children who attend the school. The field hockey team also helped during the winter by participating in an event called the SOUPer Bowl. At this event, they served soup to the participants of the event who were able to try soup from the local restaurants and keep the handcrafted bowl made by Ohio University artists with the proceeds going to the Athens Area Mediation Service.
Additionally, the volleyball and wrestling teams volunteered their times to local nursing homes and wresting tournaments, respectively. The Ohio University volleyball team gave back to the local community this past Valentine’s Day by delivering balloons and smiling faces to the residents of the local nursing homes. The wrestling team had some fun of its own when they volunteered to be officials and score keepers of a wrestling tournament which was held here in the Convocation Center for younger athletes.
As a whole, the athletic department as well as student-athletes participated in community service events. Some of these events included the Got Swabbed Bone Marrow Drive as well as the Athens Community Gardens. The athletic department teamed up with the Hillel organization and the Multicultural Center to support the Got Swabbed bone marrow drive by passing out flyers to the potential donors at a home men’s basketball game. Along with this, the Athletic department and athletes helped the local Athens Community Gardens by beginning the first phase of building a garden in Athens that provides an opportunity for organic food production in the community. Some of the tasks included preparing the garden to be planted as well as transplanting new soil into the garden area.
