Ohio Baseball Falls to Dayton

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio Baseball team (4-14) fell to Dayton (7-10-1), 12-5, on Tuesday night at Bob Wren Stadium. Ohio was led by Senior 1B Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.), who was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Redshirt freshman OF Trevor Lukkes (Tustin, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with two singles. Sophomore INF Treyben Funderburg (Beavercreek, Ohio) reached base twice with a single and a walk.

Dayton jumped on the board first with three runs in the top of the first. Dayton had one hit while Ohio had one error.

The Flyers added two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Brickman hit a two-run home run to left field. UD would add another run in the top of the third when Michael Cleary walked, advanced to second on a hit by pitch, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to go up 6-0.

Rott put the Bobcats on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a two RBI single to right center field. Rott scored sophomore OF Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio) – who reached on a single through the left side – and junior OF Jack Longo (Mayfield, Ohio), who reached on a walk. 

Fabik would go on to finish 1-for-4 with a. single and run scored.

Rott drove in another run in the bottom of the fifth. Rott had a single that scored Longo from second base to make the game 6-3.

Longo reached base twice and scored two runs during the game.

Dayton added four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to extend its advantage to 10-4.

After UD added two runs in the top of the eighth, Ohio got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Redshirt sophomore Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Ohio) scored on a passed ball after getting on base with a walk. Richardson stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Redshirt sophomore C Devonte Washington (Twinsburg, Ohio) walked as a pinch hitter and then came around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth for the final score of 12-5.

Freshman RHP Eamon Horwedel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings. Horwedel struck out one batter.

Freshman RHP Matt Brosky (Strongsville, Ohio), sophomore RHP Chace Harris (New Marshfield, Ohio) and junior LHP Nick Byrnes (Cincinnati, Ohio) all tossed scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning. Brosky struck out the side in the fourth while Harris and Byrnes eached fanned one batter. 

Freshman RHP Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) tossed 1.1 innings in the second and third and allowed one earned run. Kelly did not allow a hit but walked two batters while he struck out two batters.

Redshirt junior LHP Tony Iero (North Canton, Ohio) and sophomore RHP Edward Kutt IV (Westlake, Calif.) each tossed 0.1 innings in the eighth. Iero fanned the only batter he faced.

Freshman LHP Colin Sells (Lancaster, Ohio) pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game and allowed one earned run and struck out two batters.

Freshman RHP Eamon Horwedel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings. Horwedel struck out one batter.

Ohio will open Mid-American Conference play on Friday against Central Michigan. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
