GENEVA, Ohio -- The Ohio University swimming and diving team (4-2, 2-1 MAC) suffered its first Mid-American Conference loss of the 2013-14 season, dropping a 156-144 decision to the University of Akron on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the SPIRE Institute.
The Bobcats lost despite taking the top spot in eight events and the top two spots in three events.
Senior Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:27.54, then posted a victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.06.
Senior Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle by clocking a 1:54.90. Freshman Josephine Barker (Richmond, N. Yorkshire) took second with a time of 1:57.04.
Sophomore Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio) finished in 55.28 to take first place in the 100-yard backstroke. She also claimed second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:02.90.
Junior Michelle Gasior (Louisville, Ky.) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.29 and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle behind Williams with a 5:11.11.
Sophomore Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) captured the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle by finishing in 52.56.
Freshman Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) locked down the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly courtesy of a time of 57.12.
The Bobcats captured the top two spots in the three-meter dive, with junior Morgan Srail (Avon Lake, Ohio) recording a score of 304.05 to finish first and senior Kristin Capcik (Milwaukee, Wis.) tallying a 283.35 to place second. Both scores achieved NCAA Zone Championships qualification.
Ohio looks to rebound next Friday (Jan. 31) when it hosts Bowling Green. The MAC dual meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
