ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio Swimming and Diving picked up its fourth consecutive dual-meet victory on Friday, earning a 178.5-119.5 win over the visiting West Virginia Mountaineers. The Bobcats were led by strong performances across the board, earning the top time or score in 11 of the day’s 16 events.
As has become the norm, Ohio got off to a great start by winning the first two events of the day. The team of Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.), Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.), Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Annie Donovan (Findlay, Ohio) took first place in the 200 medley relay in a brisk time of 1:43.80. Shortly thereafter, reigning Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) took top honors in the 1000 freestyle, touching in 10:04.80, a time which ranks third all-time in program history.
Rachel Burnett of West Virginia was able to interrupt Ohio’s early streak by winning the next event, the 200 freestyle. Ohio answered back immediately and emphatically, winning the next two events in a row. Stearns took the top spot in the 100 backstroke (56.70) and Bagan touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:03.21).
Freshman diver Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) continued her incredible season, breaking her own record in the three-meter diving competition. She scored 310.95 in her six dives, scoring the second-best mark ever achieved in Bobcat history. MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) kept up Ohio’s strong diving performances, scoring a 280.64 on the one-meter board.
Stearns and Anastasia Bocharnikova closed things out for the Green and White, taking the top two spots in the 200 IM. Stearns touched in 2:06.68 and Bocharnikova finished in 2:07.19.
The Bobcats will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host Ball State in the final home dual meet of the 2011-12 season. First event is set to begin at 1 p.m.
