Ohio Edges Ball State, 165-135

MUNCIE, Ind. - In its final tune-up before the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championships, the Ohio swimming and diving team defeated Ball State Saturday afternoon, 165-135, at the Lewallen Aquatic Center. The Bobcats end their dual-meet season on a seven-meet winning streak with the victory and finish the season 12-1 overall and 6-1 in MAC competition. After setting two pool records on Friday against Xavier, freshman Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.) continued to lead the Ohio attack with three first-place finishes on the day. Heim touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.39) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.23) and swam the anchor leg of Ohio's first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:42.13). Fellow freshman Amanda Traylor (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and sophomore Chelsey Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.) each won two events as well. Traylor placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.58) and swam the second leg of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team, while Bower won the 50-yard freestyle (24.46) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.76). Ohio senior co-captain Ilse Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.29), second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:29.92) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.14). In the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, sophomores Ali Giordano (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Amy Bromberg (Deerfield, Ill.) each collected points for Ohio. Giordano placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 220.36 and Bromberg took third in the 3-meter dive with a mark of 206.85. Ohio junior Sarah Vaughn (Athens, Ohio) had a solid performance, taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.17) and second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.81). The Bobcats will now have two and a half weeks to prepare for the 2008 MAC Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. (Feb. 20-23). |
