ATHENS, Ohio - Luke Herlehy (Batavia, Ill.) took third in the 500-yard freestyle in leading the Ohio swimming and diving to fourth place after the first day of the men's Mid-American Conference Championships.
Herlehy, who finished sixth in the prelims, finished third in the finals after posting a personal-best time of 4:29.99. Herlehy shaved over eight seconds off his personal best and 16 seconds off his season-best.
Donald Jupp (Stow, Ohio) took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Jupp posted a season-best mark of 20.74 in the prelims of the event and finished fifth with a mark of 20.91.
Charlie Sparks (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Matthew Bey (Gahanna, Ohio) both tallied eighth-place times for the Bobcats. Sparks took eighth in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.29 after posting a personal-best mark of 4:35.29 in the prelims. Bey finished eighth in the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 1:56.09.
Eastern Michigan is in first with 283 points followed closely by Miami with 270. Ball State is third with 159 points followed by Ohio with 145 and Buffalo with 81.
The MAC Championships will resume tomorrow with prelims starting at noon. Finals are slated to start at 7 p.m.
