ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio Swimming and Diving kicked off its 2011-12 season with the annual Intra-Squad meet on Friday night. The Green team, led by seniors Abby Corcoran and Kristen Witham, edged the White team by a final score of 119.5 to 104.5.

“I was really happy with the events tonight,” said Head Coach Greg Werner. “I thought it was a great start to the season. I saw a lot of enthusiasm out of the team, which is something that we always pride ourselves on.”

The Green team started strong on Friday, taking first place in three of the initial four events of the evening. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, a team of Sarah Owen (Portsmouth, England), Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.), Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio) bested their White team counterparts, finishing in 1:47.48. Annika Games (Brea, Calif.) and Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz.) added to this, taking first place in the 200 and 50 Yard Freestyle races, respectively.

Making a good contest of it, the White team rallied to win three of the final four events. Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) took first in the 100 Yard Backstroke; Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) won the 400 Yard Freestyle and the team of Stearns, Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio), Emma Michaels (Findlay, Ohio) and Michelle Gasior (Louisville, Ky.) came away with top honors in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

“We saw a lot of great things tonight,” Werner said. “It’s our starting point, so whether they are good results or bad results it really doesn’t matter. This is our starting point, so we get better and progress from here.”

Ohio Swimming and Diving kicks off the first dual meet of its 2011-12 season at Bowling Green on Oct. 28. First event is set for 3 p.m.
