AKRON, Ohio - The Ohio swimming and diving team sits atop the team standings after the first day of competition at the Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron.

The Bobcats totaled 417 points to complete Friday's events in first place, eight points ahead of Buffalo. Illinois State follows Buffalo in the team standings with 371 points and Xavier enters day two in fourth place with 355 points.

Ohio used a complete team effort to climb to the top of the standings as both the upperclassmen and the Bobcat newcomers performed well.

Ohio opened up the meet with a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Chelsey Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.), senior Lindsey DeStefano (Wildwood, Mo.) and senior Mallory Rico (Mentor, Ohio) teamed to touch the wall in a time of 1:36.41 for the third-place finish.

Two freshmen kept the momentum going for Ohio in its second event, as Amanda Traylor (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Stacey Huber (Gainesville, Fla.) each placed in the top six in the 500-yard freestyle. Traylor finished in a time of 5:01.74 to place second, while Huber finished in 5:09.20 to take sixth place.

Ohio junior Ashley Marion (London, Ontario) took fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.41) and senior Emily Wylam (Yorktown, Va.) finished right behind her in fifth place (2:09.71).

Ohio saved its best for last on day one, taking first in the 400-yard medley relay in the final event of the day. Wylam, senior Michaela Hahn-Lawson (Painesville, Ohio), Heim and Bower teamed up to touch the wall first with a time of 3:53.14 to give Ohio the lead heading into day two of the three-day invitational.
