AKRON, Ohio - Ohio Swimming and Diving has finished the first day of competition at the 2011 Zippy Invitational. Through six events on Friday, the Bobcats find themselves in first place with a total of 519 team points. A total of six events were on the slate for the first day of competition, with the Green and White competing in the 200 freestyle relay, freestyle (50 and 500), 200 individual medley, 400 medley relay and one-meter diving.
The quest for a sixth-straight Zippy Invitational title began with a strong start, as the 200 freestyle relay team of Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio), Annie Donovan (Findlay, Ohio), Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.) and Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz.) earned second place and 56 points. This strong performance was only a few seconds ahead of Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.), Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio), Caroline Meyer (Holland, Mich.) and Anastasia Bocharnikova (Nizhny Tagil, Russia), who picked up fifth place and with it another huge 50 points for Ohio's cause.
One-meter diving was a huge part of Ohio's success on Friday. The Bobcats took three of the top four spots in the event, picking up 85 team points in the process. Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) picked up first place with 262.50 points while teammates Morgan Srail (Avon Lake, Ohio) and MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) were not far behind, picking up the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Saturday's preliminary events will begin at 9 a.m. The finals of the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, three-meter diving and 800 freestyle relay will begin at 6 p.m.
