AKRON, Ohio - Both the men's and women's Ohio swimming and diving squads took fifth at the three-day Summacare Invite hosted by Akron.

Ashley Marion (London, Ontario) set a meet- and pool-record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:28.38. The time, also a personal-best for Marion, was nearly seven seconds faster than the second place finisher. Marion added a second place finish in the 200 IM with a personal-best time of 2:06.47 and a fourth place time of 52.54 in the 100-yard freestyle.

"She performed very well as evidenced by her finishes," Head Coach Greg Werner said. "I was very happy with her performance and her times."

Ilse Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) swam a Bobcat season-fastest time of 17:28.07 in the 1,650-yard freestyle in taking the event. Petersen's time was over seven seconds faster than the second place finisher. Petersen added a second place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.84, which broke the previous meet record. She also posted a second place finish in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 4:59.78.

"She did very well," Werner said. "It was the first time she ever swam the mile (the 1,650 freestyle) so that's a nice way to start that event."

Sigal Simsolo (Kibbutz Yakum, Israel) took home a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:04.25. Emily Wylam (Yorktown, Va.) posted a second place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.68 and added a third place time in the 200 backstroke.

The foursome of Hallie English (Rocky River, Ohio), Marion, Simsolo and Petersen took first in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The group's time of 7:41.15 is the fastest Ohio time this year.

Donald Jupp (Stow, Ohio) won the 50-yard freestyle event for the second time in two chances, narrowly winning the event with a season-fastest time of 21.00. Jupp beat the second-place finisher by two-hundredths of a second. Jupp added a third place time of 46.81 in the 100 freestyle.

Charlie Sparks (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Petersen with a win in the 1,650 freestyle. Sparks finished the race in 16:25.16, winning by over seven seconds. Sparks added a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 4:42.29.

Illinois State took first on the women's side with a score of 1,588. Akron took second with 1,298 points followed by Clarion with 1,275, Duquesne with 1,137.5 and Ohio with 1,084.5.

St. Bonaventure finished first on the men's side with a score of 1,630.5. Xavier took second with 1,421 points followed by Clarion with 1,336, Duquesne with 1,329 and Ohio with 1,125.5.

Both the men and women will be back in the pool next when they host Denison Jan. 13, 2006. The dual meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
