FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Ohio University swimming & diving team is spending part of its winter break in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Fla., taking part in a 12-day training trip.

The Bobcats are training twice a day as they prepare for the spring stretch of their 2013-14 schedule and enjoying the sun and the beach while they are at it.

Several members of the team will be blogging about their experiences in Fort Lauderdale. Freshmen Hannah Shinn (Waterloo, Ill.) and Lauren Steele (Aurora, Ohio) recapped Ohio's final days of training in the sun.

"Tuesday started off with beach dry land. It was chilly outside, but dry land was challenging and warmed us all up. The set we did involved race pace with active recovery. The swimming paired with the temperature made this practice both mentally and physically challenging for all groups. In the evening, we all practiced together doing skill work with cords (a personal favorite of mine) and parachutes. It was cold enough that we had to cover the pool with tarps once practice was over. Midway through putting the tarps on, [interim head coach] Derick [Roe] surprised us with a get-out swim for the following night's practice. [Junior] Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.) and [freshman] Josephine Barker (Richmond, N. Yorkshire) were up for the challenge and got us out of a double the next day! Definitely a difficult day, but we got through it as a team." - Hannah

"Wednesday was our last day of winter training. It is so crazy to think that we have been here for a week and a half already. Although the past week and a half has been hard training-wise, it has been so nice to do it with twenty of your close friends. Today, we had not only a physically challenging set but also a mentally challenging set. We all got through it together. We had the night off due to a "get-out swim" from last night. We ended up (sadly) packing our suitcases and getting ready to say our goodbyes to Florida. We had a team dinner at Olive Garden. We'll wake up early on Thursday to leave for our planes to Athens. It's time to start spring semester and start getting pumped for MACs." - Lauren

The Bobcats (3-1, 2-0 MAC) will return to competition on Jan. 11, traveling to Denison for a dual meet. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
