ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University swimming & diving team (3-1, 2-0 MAC) returns to the pool for competition for the first time since November, visiting Denison on Saturday (Jan. 11). The dual meet is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. ET.
LAST TIME OUT
Ohio finished fourth of seven squads at the 2013 H2Okie Invitational (Nov. 21-23) in Christiansburg, Va.
The Bobcats received a number of season-best performances.
Junior Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) took second in the one-meter dive with a score of 281.15.
Senior Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:55.81.
Sophomore Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) clocked a 23.43 to place fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, matching Lisa MacNicol for the ninth-best time in school history. Clark also posted the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 55.46 to take sixth. Her times in both events currently rank as the best in the Mid-American Conference.
Sophomore Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio) turned in a big performance in the 100-yard backstroke, placing second with a time of 55.18. Her time currently ranks as the best in the MAC in the event. Ferguson also took eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.91.
The quartet of Ferguson, junior Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.), sophomore Casey Papp (Bloomington, Ind.) and Clark finished the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.93 - the fifth-fastest time in school history - to take fifth. The time is currently tops in the MAC.
Freshman Josephine Barker (Richmond, N. Yorkshire) clocked a 1:53.29 to place ninth in the 200-yard freestyle. She posted a season-best 1:52.44 in the prelim, which is currently the top time in the MAC in the event.
Senior Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded a season-best time of 56.62 to finish seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, which currently ranks as the second-fastest time in the MAC behind Ferguson. She also clocked a season-best time of 1:53.49 in the 200-yard freestyle to place 10th, which currently ranks as the second-fast time in the MAC behind Barker.
Senior Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:36.24.
WINTER TRAINING TRIP
The Bobcats recently completed a 12-day winter training trip in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Ohio trained twice a day as it prepared for the spring stretch of its 2013-14 schedule and enjoyed the sun and the beach while they were at it.
The diving team put together a strong performance at the Mike Peppe Diving Invite last Friday (Jan. 3) as part of the squad's trip.
Senior Kristin Capcik (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the way for the Bobcats with a third-place finish, recording a 268.05. Redshirt senior MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) posted a 262.90 to take fourth. Junior Morgan Srail(Avon Lake, Ohio) finished sixth with a 258.40. Bartlett took seventh with a 252.65.
Bartlett currently ranks as the MAC's top three-meter diver while Capcik is No. 1 in the one-meter dive.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Denison took third in the Miami Invitational (Dec. 5-7).
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, freshman Campbell Costley, freshman Carolyn Kane, senior Tully Bradford and junior Molly Willingham finished second with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7:25.79.
Kane also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.34.
Denison is set to compete against both Eastern Michigan University and Wittenberg University on Friday (Jan. 10).
Ohio returns to conference action on Jan. 25 when it visits the University of Akron. The dual meet is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. ET.
