Ohio's Anastasia Bocharnikova
Feb. 6, 2013
ATHENS, Ohio – Currently on a five-meet winning streak and riding momentum from its first win over 2011-12 Mid-American Conference champion Toledo since 2008, the Ohio University Swimming and Diving Team got another boost on Wednesday, as Anastasia Bocharnikova was named MAC Swimmer of the Week.
The award is the second consecutive honor earned by Ohio and third of the season.
Anastasia had a tremendous week for Ohio Swimming and Diving, helping to pace the Bobcats to their fourth and fifth consecutive dual-meet victories. Bocharnikova (Nizhny Tagil, Russia) and the Bobcats beat Xavier (137.5-113.5) on Feb. 1 before taking down reigning Mid-American Conference champion Toledo (170-130) on Feb. 2.
Throughout the week, Bocharnikova swam seven events, collected four first-place finishes, and never finished below third. The junior took first place three times against Xavier, winning the 50 breaststroke, the 100 backstroke, and the 100 individual medley. She followed this up with a strong performance against Toledo, taking first in the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley while also finishing third in both the 200 medley relay and the 100 breaststroke.
Anastasia’s 50 breaststroke and 100 individual medley times against Xavier were both season and lifetime bests. Her 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke times against Toledo were both non-technical suit lifetime bests, impressively coming without a full day’s rest, as the Bobcats had just competed against Xavier the prior evening.
Bocharnikova was instrumental in Ohio winning its first home dual meet of the season (Xavier) and its first victory over Toledo since 2008.
Bocharnikova’s Results for the Week
50 Breaststroke: 30.70 seconds – 1st (2/1 vs. Xavier)
100 Backstroke: 58.37 seconds – 1st (2/1 vs. Xavier)
100 IM: 59.79 seconds – 1st (2/1 vs. Xavier)
200 Medley Relay: 1:48.33 – 3rd (2/2 vs. Toledo)
100 Breaststroke: 1:06.23 – 3rd (2/2 vs. Toledo)
200 Backstroke: 2:02.08 – 1st (2/2 vs. Toledo)

Ohio will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 8 against Youngstown State. First event between the Bobcats and Penguins is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
