BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Ohio swimming and diving team broke two school records in the opening day of competition at the 2008 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships to finish the day tied for third in the team standings with 64 points. The Bobcats placed third in both the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay despite the record-setting performances.

Toledo finished the day in first place with 74 points, followed by Eastern Michigan with 66 points. Miami is tied for third with the Bobcats in the team standings with 64 points.

In the opening event of the championships, senior Emily Wylam (Yorktown, Va.), senior Michaela Hahn-Lawson (Painesville, Ohio), freshman Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Chelsey Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.) teamed to finish in third place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.81. The time sets a new school record for the Bobcats, breaking the previous school-best of 1:44.14 set at the 2000 MAC Championships. Toledo took first in the event, setting a MAC Championship record time of 1:41.32, while Miami narrowly edged the Bobcats to finish in second with a time of 1:43.79.

In the only other event of the day, the Bobcats had another record breaking performance as freshman Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.), freshman Amanda Traylor (Los Alamitos, Calif.), junior Ashley Marion (London, Ontario) and senior Ilse Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) teamed to finish in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7:23.15 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The time breaks the former school record of 7:24.59 that was established in 1990. The time was only good for third place however, as two-time defending MAC Champion Eastern Michigan posted a MAC-record time of 7:15.91 for first place and Toledo touched in 7:22.58 for second place.

The championships continue tomorrow with the preliminary heats beginning at 11 a.m. and the finals beginning at 7 p.m. Real time results are available on the University at Buffalo's athletics website at http://www.ubathletics.buffalo.edu/womensswimming/mac08/results/.
