ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University redshirt senior diver MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) has earned a spot on the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District ® 5 Women's At-Large First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday (May 15).
Hillstrom graduated in 2013 with an integrated mathematics studies degree and a 3.8 GPA, then graduated with a master's degree in recreation and sports sciences and a 4.0 GPA this spring. She became the first member of the Bobcat swimming & diving program to garner such honors since Rachel Heim achieved the feat in 2011.
A three-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection, Hillstrom owned the conference's fourth-best one-meter dive score (291.97) and the third-best three-meter dive score (281.18) during the regular season. She qualified for the NCAA Zone C Championships in both the one-meter and three-meter dives for the fourth time in her career. Hillstrom took 29th in the one-meter dive at NCAA Zones with a 237.05 in the prelim and claimed 29th in the three-meter dive with a score of 241.75. The senior placed seventh in the prelim round of the one-meter dive at the MAC Championships, totaling a 262.55 before finishing sixth in the finals with a 262.50. She finished fourth in the three-meter dive prelims at the MAC Championships with a season-best score of 304.05, then placed sixth in the finals with a 293.75.
Selected by CoSIDA members, the Academic All-District distinction is given to student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First-team honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 (on a scale of 4.00), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
