ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio Swimming and Diving has been named a 2012 Scholar All-American Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, the program announced recently. In addition to the team award, 11 Bobcats received individual All-American Honorable Mention recognition.
Greg Werner’s team posted a strong spring quarter grade-point average of 3.32 for the rankings, finishing ahead of 62 other NCAA Division I schools which had achieved at least a 3.00 or higher. Strong academic performances are no surprise to those who follow this program, as the Bobcats earned four spots on the 2012 Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC Team and five Honorable Mention nods.
The following 11 Bobcats were tabbed as 2012 Scholar All-America Team Honorable Mentions:
Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio)
Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio)
Kristin Capcik (Milwaukee, Wis.)
Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.)
Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz.)
Anne Donovan (Findlay, Ohio)
Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio)
MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.)
Emma Michaels (Findlay, Ohio)

These 11 student-athletes had a fantastic academic year, together averaging a GPA of 3.724. Cecere and Capcik especially excelled, with each registering one quarter of perfect 4.00 grades throughout the year.
Earning 11 spots on the Honorable Mention sqaud is a program record for the Bobcats, is the highest among all Mid-American Conference schools and is the second most on any team in all of NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving.
In order to qualify for the honors, student-athletes had to achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher for any quarter throughout the year or have a cumulative GPA above this mark. In addition, they had to achieve an NCAA Championship provisional "B" cut or qualify for the NCAA Zone Championships (divers only).
The Bobcats will open the 2012-13 season with their annual intra-squad meet on Oct. 12. Ohio will then begin the regular season by hosting Eastern Michigan on Oct. 27.
