Christi Smith began her stint as assistant track and field coach at Ohio University just prior to the start of the 2005 indoor season, but she arrived as no stranger to the Mid-American Conference.
A 2002 graduate of the University of Akron, Smith left as one of the most celebrated athletes in the program's history.
In 1999, Smith finished second at the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. One year later, however, she took home the crown in the same event, becoming the first national champion in school history. In 2000, Smith competed and finished tenth at the United States Olympic Trials.
She finished up her career at Akron with 11 MAC championships and a host of awards and honors. Smith was a three-time recipient of the Caroline J. Pardee Award, given to the University of Akron's female athlete of the year. She was a finalist in 2000 for the James E. Sullivan Leadership Award and also participated in the Student Athlete Advisory Council at Akron. Also in 2000, Smith served as president of Akron's Student Athlete Advisory Council and became a member of the MAC's Student Athlete Advisory Council.
Prior to arriving in Athens, she coached at the New World Track Club in Columbus. There she assisted with the field and combined events.
