Bobcats Set New Marks, Fight For MAC Qualifiers At Buckeye Tune-up

Donyelle Brown continues to reach new levels of excellence for the Ohio throwing unit this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio University women’s track & field team fought for their last chance to earn their trips to the MAC Championships on Friday in Columbus.

The Bobcats hit the road for their last meet at the Buckeye Tune-up at Ohio State University competing alongside fellow MAC opponent Miami and 24 other teams including Cincinnati and Marshall.

The Cats’ worked together to take third place out of 15 teams at the meet with 84 points behind Austin Peay (122) and event champion Ohio State (242.66). 

In field events Sophomore Donyelle Brown (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) shattered her personal best and set a new school record for the ‘Cats in the weight throw with a distance of 18.33m.

Brown had already broken the school record this season with a throw of 17.83m, set in January at the Tom Wright Classic in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Freshman Taylor Smith (Canal Winchester, Ohio) also claimed her trip to Kent in the high jump with an impressive mark of 1.68m, automatically qualifying her for the MAC Championships.

Smith will be joined by fellow Bobcat junior Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) who qualified at the SPIRE Division I Track & Field Invitational last week with a jump of 1.71m.

Cuckler earned five points for Ohio on Friday with a fourth-place finish in the long jump (5.51). Freshman Olivia Mayfield finished sixth (5.40m) to earn three points, while sophomore Erika Armstead (Cincinnati, Ohio) was eighth (5.23m).

On the track, sophomore Caroline Hildebrand (Hilliard, Ohio) brought in a total of eight points for the Bobcats taking second place in the 3000m with a MAC qualifying and personal-best time of 9:57.48. Sophomore Kayla Scott (Canal Winchester, Ohio) took third place just behind Hildebrand with a time of 10:08.07.

Scott and Hildebrand also with compete in the 5000m next week at MAC Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Peyton Adkins (Gallipolis, Ohio) earned three points for Ohio in the one mile run with a personal-best time of 5:23.06.

In addition to Friday’s qualifiers, other Ohio student-athletes that will represent the Green & White at MAC Indoor Championships include seniors Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) whom will compete in the one mile and Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) competing in the 3,000m.

The MAC Indoors begin on Feb. 28 and run through March 3 next weekend.
