YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Ohio University tandem of juniors Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) and Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) excelled in their individual events on day two of competition at the MAC Indoor Championships Saturday at Bowen Fieldhouse.
Thompson won the one mile run in a personal-best time of 4:48.22, which set a new Ohio school record in the event. Thompson’s time was the fastest in the Mid-American Conference this season. The previous school record of 4:48.32 was set by Accurso at last season's MAC Indoor Championships.
Coupled with her share of Friday’s Ohio DMR title, Thompson finished with 12.5 points at the MAC Indoors, which placed her 13th out of 132 competitors.
Accurso added two outstanding finishes to her impressive career ledger Saturday, as the junior won the 3,000m run in 9:36.43 and finished fourth in the one mile run in 4:51.76. Accurso finished the event with a combined 17.5 points, which ranked her sixth among individual competitors.
Ohio placed seventh overall at the league meet with 38 points. Kent State won the team title with 175 points.
"The MAC meet was a very solid two days from our team," head coach Clay Calkins said. "Traditionally we build on indoor performances and improve in the outdoor season and I feel that will be the case this year. We are very proud of our student-athletes who qualified and competed this weekend."
Freshman Kayla Scott (Canal Winchester, Ohio) also ran well Saturday and earned a point for the Bobcats with an eighth place finish in the 3,000m run (9:57.89).
Ohio now returns to South Bend for the second time in a month as the Bobcats will compete at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational March 1-2.
