Wake Forest Open Final Results
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Ohio University women's track & field team opened the 2013 outdoor season with a strong showing in the 5,000m this weekend at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Junior Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) broke the school record in the event Friday evening, crossing the finish line in a blistering 16:21.56. Her time was 46 seconds faster than the next closest finisher. The time should qualify Accurso for NCAA Regional competition this spring.
Sophomore Morgan Reichert (Pataskala, Ohio) placed sixth in the 5,000m in a strong time of 17:24.86, while junior Morgan Meade (Marion, Ohio) and freshman Krista Roehlig (Uniontown, Ohio) finished ninth and 10th with times of 17:47.95 and 17:51.28, respectively.
A number of Bobcats also posted top-20 finishes at the Wake Forest Open. Senior Danielle Winningham (Barboursville, W. Va.) posted a strong third-place finish in the 800m run (2:15.30) Saturday, while freshman Tessa Weigand (Akron, Ohio) placed sixth in 2:16.45 and senior Erin Gale (Wadsworth, Ohio) came in 15th (2:19.56).
Winningham also finished 16th in the 400m dash (57.59), while senior Ashley Waddington (4:48.77) and freshman Kayla Scott (4:55.51) placed 12th and 16th in the 1,500m run.
Waddington also earned a 10th-place finish in the 3,000m run (10:26.02).
In relay action, the team of senior Kiley Mathews (Cortland, Ohio), sophomore Karissa Conrad (Lancaster, Ohio), junior Kara Jackson (Bidwell, Ohio) and Winningham placed eighth out of 24 teams in the 4x400m relay (3:56.41) on Saturday.
In field events, senior Alexis Geiger (Gallipolis, Ohio) came in second in the long jump with her best jump in three seasons (5.68m), while sophomore Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) placed fourth with a career-high leap of 5.65m.
Cuckler placed 10th in the long jump with a leap of 14.97m, while sophomore Janiece Rose (Franklinville, N.J.) posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put (12.84m). Cuckler also earned a 10th-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.97).
The Bobcats placed two student-athletes in the top-20 of the hammer throw. Senior Lauren McCullough (Lancaster, Ohio) finished 15th (42.15m) in the event, while junior Alexa Macri (St. Clairsville, Ohio) was 19th with a throw of 40.34m.
Macri also finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 40.89m.
In "B" Section events, freshman Weigand finished sixth in the 1,500m (4:51.03), while Gale placed eighth in 4:51.12.
Ohio returns to action with split-squad events the weekend of March 29-30. Ohio will send student-athletes to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., as well as the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
