MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Ohio Track and Field opened the 2012 outdoor season on a positive note this week, posting solid marks at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Bobcat student athletes earned a number of impressive results across the board at the annual event hosted by Coastal Carolina University.

Highlighting the invitational were some very strong Bobcat performances in distance events. Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) earned second place in the 5000 meter run, finishing in a brisk 17:24.49. Teammate Lauren Adkins (Gallipolis, Ohio) was not far behind, placing 16th in 18:45.21. The Bobcats then had two student-athletes finish in the top 50 of the 1500 meter run, as Ashley Waddington (Sandusky, Ohio) took 24th in 4:57.98 while Emily Skidmore (Athens, Ohio) earned 38th with a time of 5:04.57.

Additionally, Waddington and Skidmore did quite well in the 3000 meter run, placing 14th and 19th, respectively. Waddington finished in 10:51.15 while Skidmore ran an 11:05.24.

Ohio had significant success in middle distance events over the weekend as well, as two Bobcat teams took second and seventh in the 4x800 meter relay. The team of Hope McCarty (Hudson, Ohio), Courtney Weiss (Perrysburg, Ohio), Delaney Bolger (Lebanon, Ohio) and Brittany Tyree (University Heights, Ohio) placed second in 9:09.70 while the foursome of Erin Gale (Wadsworth, Ohio), Skidmore, Waddington and Danielle Winningham (Barboursville, W.Va.) earned seventh in 9:34.61.

The Bobcats turned in multiple impressive results in field events throughout the weekend. Tyree earned fifth place in the high jump “B” competition (1.55m); Kristen Mason (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) placed 16th in the hammer throw (46.50m) and Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) and Tyree took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump “B” competition with leaps of 5.17m and 5.10 m.

Ohio Track and Field will next be in action on March 24 at the VertKlasse Meet in High Point, North Carolina.
