Bobcats Begin Outdoor Season at Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, NC.- Ohio Track and Field began the outdoor portion of its 2010 schedule over the weekend, competing at the Wake Forest Open. Though there was no team scoring at the meet, the Bobcats were very well-represented. Senior Emily Amendola took first place in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.70 meters (172.90 feet), a distance that ranks fourth all-time in program history. She also finished fourth in the discus throw—40.76 meters (133.73 feet) to cap off a very solid weekend. Another Bobcat finished in the top ten of the discus throw competition, as Bahiyjaui Allen (Toledo, Ohio) earned the seventh spot with her throw of 40.04 meters (131.36 feet). The senior and 2010 Indoor Mid-American Conference Shot Put champion also did well in the shot put competition, taking third place. Ohio continued its strong performance in distance events from indoor to outdoor seasons, as four Bobcat student-athletes finished in the top half of the 3,000 meter run. Kari Summers (Troy, Ohio) took second with a 9:58.96 while teammate Jenielle Hunt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned third with her 10:03.69. Rounding out the other two aforementioned runners were Lauren Fett (Defiance, Ohio), who crossed 19th in 10:53.06 and Kelley O’Brien (Wexford, Pa.), who finished 21st with her 10:53.74. Sophomore Courtney Weiss (Perrysburg, Ohio) competed well in the 400 meter hurdles, placing tenth of 45 with a 1:04.63. Teammates Janaia Sledge-Maith (Lumberton, N.J.) and Sharon Gase (Plymouth, Ohio) were not far behind, crossing in 13th and 14th, respectively. Javelin throw was another good event for the Green and White over the weekend, as two ‘Cats placed in the top third of the results. Freshman Lauren McCullough (Lancaster, Ohio) took seventh with her 38.28 meter (125.59 feet) launch while teammate Hope McCarty (Hudson, Ohio) placed 13th with a throw of 35.55 meters (116.63 feet). The Bobcats will next be in action when they travel to Toledo for the Toledo Collegiate Quad Challenge on March 27.
