OXFORD, Ohio - The Ohio Bobcat track and field team opened up their 2008 outdoor season on Saturday at the Southern Cup hosted by Miami University. The throwers and jumps squads performed well, including a first place finish in the shot put from Bahiyjaui Allen.

Behind the Bobcats' field event strength, Ohio took fourth place with 97 team points. Cincinnati took first with 239 points and the host Redhawks placed second with 175 team points.

Allen tossed the shot 47 feet, 5.75 inches to take first overall. Her mark was more than three feet better than second place.

Also in the throws, Melissa Gressick and Jessie Tanner placed third and fourth, respectively, in the javelin. Tanner, the Bobcats' record holder for the indoor weight throw, also placed in other events. The junior took third in the discuss with a toss of 140 feet, nine inches and then placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 152 feet, one inch.

Sophomore Emily Amendola started her outdoor season strong as well with a second place finish in the hammer throw (161-09) and fifth place showings in the shot put and discuss.

Continuing with the field events, Cathy Udeani placed third in the women's high jump with a mark of five feet, seven inches and Brittany Vinson took fourth place in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, eight inches. Vinson also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 3.25 inches.

On the track, Ohio senior Andrea Maas made her first appearance for the Bobcats at the Southern Cup after redshirting last season to prepare for her final year in Athens. Maas took eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:39.72.
 

 

Bobcat sprinter Chanelle Harmon recorded a pair of fifth place times in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash events. The junior also led the Bobcats' 4x100 relay team to a second place finish along with Lauren Moore, Melissa Wiley and Shareyna Spears.

Ohio's next meet will be on April 5 in Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational. It will be one of two meets this season where the Bobcats will participate in outside the state of Ohio.
