ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University women's track & field student-athletes won four events at the annual Ohio Team Challenge Saturday at the Goldsberry Track.
The host Bobcats finished second with 107 points, behind event champion Marshall (153 points). West Virginia placed third at the tri-meet with 72 points.
"This was a low key meet as we prepare for the All-Ohio Championships next week," head coach Clay Calkins said. "A lot of our athletes ran non-traditional events today and some of our top athletes did not compete. But it was a great day for the throws and we had some great individual performances on the track. Marshall and West Virginia are two high caliber teams that provided a great tune-up for next weekend."
Janiece Rose (Franklinville, N.J.) highlighted the Ohio unit on the field, as the talented sophomore posted a personal-best throw of 13.81m to win the shot put.
Senior Alexis Geiger (Gallipolis, Ohio) won the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.75m. Her jump was the fifth-best among MAC competitors this season and should qualify her for the MAC Outdoor Championships in May.
"I'm starting to get back in the swing of things," Geiger said. "I felt really good out there and my jumps were better today."
On the track, senior Danielle Winningham (Barboursville, W. Va.) won the 800m run in a season-best 2:13.24. The time was seventh-best in the MAC so far this season.
"My goal this season is to run the 800m in 2:08, so this was a good step forward," Winningham said. "Hopefully next week I'll continue to improve at the All-Ohio Championships."
Ohio also placed two additional runners in the top-4 of the 800m, as junior Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) finished third in a personal-best 2:20.05 while sophomore Delaney Bolger (Lebanon, Ohio) placed fourth in 2:21.51.
Ohio's fourth event win came from Thompson, who captured the 1,500m run in 4:41.49. The Bobcats also received top-five finishes from junior Morgan Meade (Marion, Ohio), who placed fourth in 4:48:45, and freshman Krista Roehlig (Uniontown, Ohio), who placed fifth in 4:50.04.
"It's nice to be able to race at home, because you're always more motivated when you have people cheering for you," Thompson said. "I conserved energy at the final curve and then I broke out in the final meters to get the win."
In other field events, junior Olivia Vitou (Rocky River, Ohio) placed third in the javelin with a personal-best launch of 35.12m, while senior Alexa Macri (St. Clairsville, Ohio) finished third in the discus with a throw of 40.63m.
In the hammer throw, senior Lauren McCullough (Lancaster, Ohio) finished third (44.78m), while Macri placed fourth with a throw of 44.00m.
On the sprints circuit, Senior Kiley Mathews (Cortland, Ohio) paced the Bobcats with a third-place finish in the 400m dash (58.98) and also placed fifth in the 200m dash (27.00).
The Bobcats now gear up to host the All-Ohio Championships for the first time since 2010. The two-day event gets underway on Friday (April 12).
