COLUMBUS, Ohio - Bolstered by a bevy of strong finishes in the 1500m and 5000m runs, the Ohio University women's track & field team put forth a strong effort on day one of the Jesse Owens Track Classic.
Seniors Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) and Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) utilized each other for pace brilliantly in the 1500m run while surging to a pair of top-5 finishes. Thompson placed fourth in 4:26.08, just .04 seconds off her personal-best time. Accurso finished fifth in a personal-best time of 4:26.66. The race marked her first action of the 2014 outdoor season.
The times were the second and third fastest in the MAC this season and will get both runners into the event at next month's MAC Outdoor Championships in Athens.
Sophomore Krista Roehlig (Uniontown, Ohio) posted a strong second-place showing in Section 1 of the 5000m run, crossing the finish line in 17:30.59, just three seconds off her personal best. Senior Morgan Meade placed 20th in a time of 18:27.61.
In the showcase portion of the 5000m run, sophomore Kayla Scott (Canal Winchester, Ohio) finished 17th in a time of 17:36.15.
In field events, sophomore Ashlee Bilhimer (Gardner, Kan.) finished eighth with a throw of 37.72m, while junior Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) was 11th with a mark of 35.42m. Senior Lauren McCullough (Lancaster, Ohio) finished right behind in 13th with a throw of 35.11m.
In addition, senior Alexa Macri (St. Clairsville, Ohio) placed 17th in the discus throw with a throw of 42.71m, marking her best throw of the the season
