COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) set a personal-best in the 1,500m to lead the Ohio University women’s track & field team on day one of the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
Thompson finished second in the 1,500m in a blistering time of 4:30.72, which marked the best finish by a MAC competitor this season. The finish also earns Thompson an automatic bid into next month’s MAC Outdoor Championships.
Fellow junior Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) led the Ohio contingent in the 5,000m Showcase, finishing second in a time of 16:36.22. Sophomore Morgan Reichert (Pataskala, Ohio) finished 10th in the event in 17:22.80.
In the heat portion of the 5,000m, a pair of Ohio runners posted personal best times. Freshman Krista Roehlig (Uniontown, Ohio) finished first in 17:32.69, while junior Morgan Meade (Marion, Ohio) placed second in 17:35.69. The time eclipsed Meade’s previous top mark by more than 12 seconds.
Ashley Waddington (Sandusky, Ohio) posted the best finish of her career in the 3,000m steeplechase. The senior finished fifth in a competitive field with a time of 10:48.65. It marked the fifth-fastest time by a MAC student-athlete in the event this season.
In Ohio’s lone field event of the day, senior Lauren McCullough (Lancaster, Ohio) finished fourth with a throw of 37.21m, while junior Olivia Vitou (Rocky River, Ohio) placed ninth (34.26m).
The remainder of Ohio’s competitors will see action Saturday in the final day of the Jesse Owens Classic.
