Bobcats Blast Competition at Ohio Open

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio women's track and field team won all 15 events at the Ohio Open on Saturday afternoon, a dominating performance in the Bobcats' final meet before the MAC Championships. The highlight of the day came from Emily Amendola (Beach City, Ohio), who broke the all-time program record in the hammer throw, with a heave of 180 feet, seven inches. The mark eclipsed Jacklyn Lugaila's previous record of 178-10 set in 2006. Amendola also set her personal-best in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 10 inches. Her previous long throw this year was 45 feet, 9.75 inches. She qualified for regionals in both events.
Bahiyjaui Allen (Sylvania, Ohio) took first in the shot put, launching the eight-pound shot 49 feet, 3.5 inches, her second longest toss this season. Jessie Tanner (Newark, Ohio) won two events at the Ohio Open. She threw the javelin 138 feet, 11 inches, improving on her and the Bobcats' season-best in the event by almost a full foot. The junior also claimed the title in the discus, with a throw of 148 feet, six inches - her second best throw this season. Chanelle Harmon (Cincinnati, Ohio) ran a 12.55 in the 100 meters to claim first place and she teamed up with Melissa Wiley (Columbus, Ohio), Shareyna Spears (Toledo, Ohio) and Brittany Vinson (Amelia, Ohio) to cross the finish line first in the 4x100 meter relay. Wiley took first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.00. Vinson claimed the gold in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3.25 inches. The jump was her third best this season. Vinson also took first in the triple jump. Also winning in the final meet of the year and second home contest of the outdoor season were Kristi Sturges (Parma, Ohio) in the 200 meter dash, Lauren Johnson (Dayton, Ohio) in the 400 meters, Jamie Schlemmer (Centerville, Ohio) in the 1,500 meters, Sharon Gase (Plymouth, Ohio) in the 400 meter hurdles, Ashlee Reynolds (Belpre, Ohio) in the high jump and Christen Bosch (Rockbridge, Ohio) in the pole vault. The meet was not team scored. Student-athletes from Marietta, Capital, Tiffin, Findlay and the Bowling Green and West Virginia club teams competed at the Ohio Open. The Bobcats will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio next weekend for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. Ohio finished 10th at the indoor MAC Championships. |
