ATHENS, Ohio — Behind a flurry of personal-best distance and jumps performances, the Ohio University women’s track & field sits in fifth place after two days of competition at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Bobcats have posted 27 points over the first two days of action and trail fourth-place Bowling Green by four points. Kent State leads the event with 47 points.
In multis-event action, junior Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) set a new personal-best in the heptathlon Friday, finishing fifth with a total of 5,038 points. The combined score was four points better than her previous career high set earlier this season. The solid effort earned Cuckler four points for the Bobcat team score.
Leading the charge on the track for Ohio on the track was sophomore Kayla Scott (Canal Winchester, Ohio), who set a new-personal best by almost 15 seconds in the 3000m steeplechase. Scott crossed the finish line in 10:40.53 to finish fourth and earn five points for the Bobcats. After finishing eighth at last year's MAC meet, Scott improved by four spots in 2014.
Sophomore Allison Roeth (Houston, Ohio) also set a personal best by close to 20 seconds while placing 12th in the steeple (11:15.71). Fellow sophomore Peyton Adkins (Gallipolis, Ohio) also hit a personal best by more than 15 seconds en route to a 15th-place finish (11:22.16).
Senior Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) earned a solid fourth-place in the preliminaries of the 1500m run (4:32.92) and will compete in the final tomorrow at 1:20 p.m. Sophomore Tessa Weigand (Akron, Ohio) placed 16th in the prelim in a time of 4:53.44.
Also on the track, senior Kara Jackson (Bidwell, Ohio) finished 17th in the 400m dash preliminaries with a time of 57.36 seconds. In the 800m run, junior Delaney Bolger (Lebanon, Ohio) placed 15th in a time of 2:15.01, while freshman Amanda Sacha (Lakewood, Ohio) crossed the finish line in 20th (2:22.75).
In jumps action, redshirt freshman Olivia Mayfield (Beachwood, Ohio) just missed out on the podium for the long jump, placing 10th with a personal-best mark of 5.54m. Mayfield has set a new long jump PR in every home meet for the Green & White this season.
After placing fifth in the hammer throw on Thursday, junior Donyelle Brown (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) followed up that strong performance with a 10th-place showing in the shot put. Brown finished the event with a top mark of 13.80m.
The Bobcats wrap up competition at the 2014 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships tomorrow in Athens. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s discus and women’s high jump.
