YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio University women’s track & field team kicked off the 2013-14 campaign by winning three events at the YSU Icebreaker Friday at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS).
The Bobcats were led by stellar senior Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio), who placed first in the 3,000m run. Her time of 9:27.92 automatically qualified the senior for the event at the 2014 MAC Indoor Championships.
Janiece Rose (Franklinville, N.J.) shined for Ohio in her 2013-14 debut. The sophomore won the weight throw with a throw of 16.22m, her career-best by more than half a meter. She then placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 12.73m.
In middle distance competition, junior Delaney Bolger (Lebanon, Ohio) won her first career individual event after crossing the finish line in the 800m run in 2:20.20.
Junior Chanda Cuckler approached her personal best mark in the high jump, with a 1.68m leap to finish second in the event. The Athens, Ohio, native also finished second in the 60m hurdles (9.00), while teammate Kristen Winkel (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed fifth in 9.16.
Ohio earned a pair of top-5 finishes in the long jump courtesy of freshman Olivia Mayfield and sophomore Erika Armstead (Cincinnati, Ohio). Armstead placed fourth with a jump of 5.28m, while Mayfield was fifth with a mark of 5.25m.
In sprints action, senior Kara Jackson (Bidwell, Ohio) placed sixth in the 400m dash in a time of 59.32. Freshman Tajah Smith (Copley, Ohio) made a solid debut for Ohio in the 200m dash, finishing seventh in 26:41.
To wrap up the evening, Ohio’s 4x400 ‘A’ Team finished fifth in a time of 4:06.66. The quartet of Bobcats included Bolger, Jackson, Cuckler and freshman Amanda Sacha (Lakewood, Ohio).
After Friday’s meet, Ohio will take more than a month off before returning to action on Jan. 25 at the Tom Wright Classic in Bowling Green, Ohio.
