ATHENS, Ohio –Juli Accurso will compete this weekend in the 5000 meter event at the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. The race will be held on Friday at approximately 10:25 p.m. EST on Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
The All-MAC runner took the final step in her quest to qualify this weekend after setting a course record at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The Bobcat sophomore broke the Meyo Track record in the 5,000 meter event with a time of 15:58.69. The previous mark of 16:02.14 was set by Notre Dame's Stephanie Madia in 2006.
Accurso's previous best occurred just a few weeks ago in Seattle when she ran 16:05.59 at the UW Husky Invitational. She ran away from the field with a time of 16:05.59, finishing almost six seconds ahead of the closest competitor and smashing the Ohio school record by almost 17 seconds.
Accurso was strong this season in all types of distance events. She set the MAC mark in the 3k (48th nationally) with a time of 9:21.89. She not only broke Annie Beecham's previous school record in the event by almost 11 seconds, but obliterated her own career best by 1:18. Accurso went on to win the event at the MAC Championships.
Accurso started the indoor season by winning the mile at the Buckeye Classic in Columbus. Two weeks later, she bested that mark by two seconds at the Youngstown Invitational. She finished second in the mile with a time of 4:48.32 at the MAC Championships, less than a second off the mark of MAC record holder Emma Kertesz
