ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University track student-athlete Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) has been named the MAC Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Friday.
Accurso, who also was named MAC Female Track Athlete of the Week, earned the academic honor for the week of March 11-17.
Accurso blew past the rest of the field while breaking the Ohio school record at the Wake Forest Open on Friday, March 16. Accurso crossed the finish line in a blistering 16:21.56 to win the race.
The time was 46 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and more than a minute better than the second best time among MAC competitors in the 5,000m this season. The time should qualify Accurso for NCAA Regional competition this spring.
Accurso has accumulated an impressive 3.861 GPA during her first three years at Ohio while pursuing a double major in Global Studies (Europe) and French, as well as a minor in business.
Accurso has put together another outstanding year for the Bobcats this season. In November, the USTFCCCA named her the 2012 Great Lakes Region Runner of the Year. She earned this award after winning the 2012 NCAA Great Lakes Regional in a school record time of 20:07.
Accurso placed 38th at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships in November with a time of 20:14.4 on the six-kilometer course. The finish earned her back-to-back All-America honors.
During the 2013 indoor track season, Accurso continued to impress. At the MAC Indoor Championships in February, the junior won the 3,000m run in 9:36.43 and finished fourth in the one mile run in 4:51.76. She also was part of the distance medley relay team that broke the Ohio and MAC meet record by finishing in 11:26.80.
It marked the third-straight season that the Ohio DMR team captured the title at the MAC Indoor Championships.
Accurso and the Bobcats return to action with split-squad events the weekend of March 29-30. Ohio will send student-athletes to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., as well as the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
