OXFORD, Ohio - The Ohio track & field team finished third at the fourth annual Southern Ohio Cup Saturday aty George Rider Track and Field Complex. Cincinnati won the meet (295), followed by Miami (295) and Ohio (221). The meet champion is determined by adding both the men's and women's team scores.
The women tallied 21 top-three slots in the 19 events of the afternoon. Collecting gold medals were junior Foli James (Albany) and senior Katie Fiala (Rocky River). James claimed first in both the 100-meter high hurdles (14.25) and the long jump (18'11 ¾"), while Fiala turned in a season-best performance of 17:53.97 to win the 5,000 meters.
Other key finishers for Ohio included senior Jen Martin (Athens), who captured second place in the 200 meters (24.80), as well as finishing third in the 100 meters (12.46). Sophomore Randi Carter (Wheaton, Ill.) recorded a second-place performance in the 100 meters, while senior C'Rai Weeden (Cleveland) took third in the 400 meters (56.46). Freshman Kelly Felter (Kent) crossed the line third in the 5,000-meter run (18:32.35), while Jericka Duncan (Aurora) captured second in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:02.51). In the high jump, seniors Michelle Borsz (Parma) and Sarah List (Milford) captured second (5'6") and third (5'6"), respectively. Pole vaulters Jill Meranda (Loveland) and Calah Gilders (Guysville) also finished two-three, each clearing a height of 10'6 ¼". Carter leapt to third place in the long jump (18'10 ½"), while Monique Taylor (Whitby, Ont.) snared third in the triple jump (36'10 ¼"). In the discus, Mary Williams (Cincinnati) and Lacey Poff (Gahanna) claimed second (144'1") and third (132'6"), respectively. Williams also nabbed second in the hammer throw (147'2"), while Heather Moore (Galena) finished second in the javelin (123'10").
On the men's side, tri-captain Steve Godek (Mentor) earned the Bobcat's sole win with a toss of 50' ¾" in the shot put. Also of note was Jason Lanza's (Greensburg, Pa.) third-place showing in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (54.76).
Following Godek's lead, the Bobcats dominated the throwing events. Freshman Eric Bildstein (North Olmsted) contributed with second place in the shot put (43'5") and third in the hammer (141'5"), while Nate Arbogast (Bellefontaine) took second in the hammer (141'5").
Rounding out the top performances for Ohio were Roger Redd (Pickerington) with third in the 200 meters (21.81) and Kyle Sheer (Bradford) finished third in the high jump (6'6").
Ohio is back on the track April 26-27, as it travels to Hillsdale, Mich. for the Hillsdale Invitational. The Bobcats return to Goldsberry Track at Pruitt Field on May 11 when they host the Ohio Open.
