Three Ohio Track & Field Student Athletes Garner Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND -- Three members of the Ohio University women's track & field squad earned spots on the 2014 Women's Outdoor Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday (July 8).

Seniors Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) and Melissa Thompson (Westerville, Ohio) and junior Chanda Cuckler (Athens, Ohio) represented the Bobcats.

In addition, junior Delaney Bolger (Lebanon, Ohio), junior Karissa Conrad (Lancaster, Ohio), senior Alexa Macri (St. Clairsville, Ohio), sophomore Allison Roeth (Houston, Ohio), sophomore Kayla Scott (Canal Winchester, Ohio), senior Olivia Vitou (Rocky River, Ohio) and sophomore Tessa Weigand (Akron, Ohio) received Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention.

To earn a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's contests. A total of 40 student-athletes were named to the women's team.

ACADEMIC ALL-MAC TEAM

Juli Accurso | Senior | 3.905 GPA | Linguistics, French
Accurso won the 5000-meter and 10000-meter titles at the 2014 MAC Outdoor Championships to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors and First Team All-MAC laurels. She set a new MAC Outdoor meet record in the 10k with a time of 34:32.59. Accurso finished 32nd in the 10000-meter run and 41st in the 5000-meter run at the NCAA East Regional. She set a new school record in the 5000-meter with a time of 15:59.12 at the Payton Jordan Invitational in April and won the 10K run at the Hillsdale "GINA" Relays in a time of 34:18.52. Accurso became Ohio's first student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Capital One First Team Academic All-America selection and earned her second straight CoSIDA Capital One All-District 5 nod.

Melissa Thompson | Senior | 3.888 GPA | Journalism, Women's & Gender Studies
Thompson finished seventh in the 1500-meter run during the MAC Outdoor Championship. She won the 1500-meter run at the All-Ohio Championships in April and placed second in the 1500-meter run at the Roanoke/Virginia Tech Qualifier with a time of 4:27.78. Thompson ran a season-best time of 4:26.08 to finish fourth in the 1500 during the Jesse Owens Classic.

Chanda Cuckler | Junior | 3.685 | Nursing
Cuckler finished fifth in the heptathlon with a career-best total of 5038 points at the MAC Outdoor Championships. She also finished ninth in the MAC high jump with a mark of 1.61 meters. Cuckler won the high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters during the Ohio Open. She finished third in the pentathlon (5005 points) at the All-Ohio Championships in April and finished third in the high jump with a season-best mark in the high jump (1.71 meters) at the Wake Forest Open.

ACADEMIC ALL-MAC HONORABLE MENTION

Delaney Bolger | Junior | 3.734 GPA | Spanish, Geographic Information Science
Bolger finished 15th in the 800-meter run during the MAC Outdoor Championships in 2:15.01 and was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed 11th in 3:52.93. She placed second in the 800-meter run at the RedHawk Invitational in 2:14.95. Bolger also finished second in the 800 in a personal-best time of 2:12.31 at the All-Ohio Championships and earned a third-place finish in the 800 in 2:15.32 at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational.

Karissa Conrad | Junior | 3.901 GPA | Commercial Photography
Conrad placed 18th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.91 during the MAC Outdoor Championships. She also competed on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 11th in 3:52.93. Conrad won the 400-meter hurdles title at the Ohio Open in 1:04.33. She was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.70 at the RedHawk Invitational.

Alexa Macri | Senior | 3.336 GPA | Physical Education
Macri finished 15th in the discus throw at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a career-best throw of 43.45 meters. She Won back-to-back discus titles at the Gator Invitational (43.02) and the Roanoke/Virginia Tech Twilight Qualifier (42.66m) in May. Macri placed third in the discus throw at the Ohio Open with a mark of 42.78 meters.

Allison Roeth | Sophomore | 3.910 GPA | Middle Child Math & Social Studies
Roeth finished 12th in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 11:51.71. She finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the RedHawk Invitational (11:33.20) and All-Ohio Championships (11:34.51). Roeth placed 11th in the 5000-meter run in 18:41.60 during the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational.

Kayla Scott | Sophomore | 3.579 GPA | Integrated Language Arts
Scott finished fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 10:40.53 during the MAC Outdoor Championships. She also finished 12th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:37.39. Scott finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the All-Ohio Championships in April and posted a season-best time of 17:28.37 in the 5000-meter run at the Wake Forest Open to place fifth.

Olivia Vitou | Senior | 3.677 GPA | Graphic Design, Business Administration
Vitou placed 12th in the javelin throw with a mark of 34.68 meters at the MAC Outdoor Championships. She finished fifth in the javelin at the Ohio Open with a personal-best throw of 37.79 meters. Vitou earned a fifth-place javelin finish at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational with a throw of 36.93 meters.

Tessa Weigand | Senior | 3.891 GPA | Accounting
Weigand finished 16th in the 1500-meter run at the MAC Outdoor Championships. She placed fourth in the 1500 in back-to-back meets, including the Roanoke/Virginia Tech Qualifier (4:50.35) and the Ohio Open (4:57.48). Weigand placed fifth in the 1500 at the RedHawk Invitational in a season-best time of 4:44.68.
