Delaware, Ohio - The Ohio women's cross country team, led by senior Andrea Maas (Cincinnati, Ohio), placed five runners in the top 20 to edge out Ohio State for the team title Friday at the All-Ohio Championships. The men's squad, led by sophomore Shamus Eaton (Uniontown, Ohio) earned an eighth place finish. On the women's 5k course, Maas finished fourth overall with a time of 18:30.70, which was only 19 seconds behind race-winner, Katie Wieferich from Wooster. Junior Carime Reinhart (Bascom, Ohio) finished closely behind Maas with a time of 18:52.0 for an 11th place finish. Freshmen Annie Beecham(Granville, Ohio) and Kari Summers (Troy, Ohio) finished 14th and 15th, respectively. The women Bobcats defeated the second place Buckeyes 63-73. Thirty-eight schools competed on the women's side. "The women ran a great team race," said Head Coach Clay Calkins. "Maas and Reinhart did a great job stepping up as our team leaders, but you can't single out any individual today. The entire top five ran as a tight pack and they did a great job. As coaches, we are very impressed."
This is the ninth team title that the women's squad has won at the All-Ohio Championships. The last time the Bobcats took home a title was in 1996. Last year, the Ohio women finished 6th at the race. On the men's side, Eaton finished 26th with a time of 26:44.8 in the 8K race. Junior Brian King (Hilliard, Ohio) placed 34th with a time of 26:59.20. Following King was sophomore Todd Holbrook (Dayton, Ohio) who finished 66th with a time of 27.35.0. The men finished with 272 points, just eight points behind Mount Union. Ohio State won the men's title with 42 points. The Bobcat men were the number three MAC team at the race, finishing only behind Miami and Kent. Overall, 42 teams competed on the men's side. "The men all ran well and they achieved the initial goal we had coming into this race, which was to place in the top 10," Calkins said. "We (the coaches) are really pleased with the performance of both squads." Next on the calendar for the Bobcats is the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 14 in Terre Haute, Ind. The Pre-Nationals will be the last regular-season meet for the Bobcats and Calkins thinks that it will be an exciting one. The team will then have a week off before competing in the MAC Championships on Oct. 28 in Buffalo, N.Y. |
