Five Ohio Runners Earn Academic All-MAC Honors
Nov. 19, 2005 CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the first time in history, the Ohio cross country program placed five runners on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team as the women's Ali Green and Carime Reinhart and the men's Craig Leon, Brian List and Brian King were selected. The senior Green (Lancaster) is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection, while Leon (Van Wert), List (Milford), King (Richfield, Minn.) and Reinhart (Bascom) earn the honor for the first time in cross country. Green, King and List were named to the track & field's Academic All-MAC team back in May. The league announced Friday that 11 male and 16 female student-athletes were named to the team by the faculty representative from each MAC school. A representative cannot vote for a runner nominated from the same school. Students not in their first year at a school with a 3.20 cumulative GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of their team's games are eligible for inclusion. Last year, Green was the first women's cross country runner since 1998 to earn academic honors. A magazine journalism major with a 3.89 GPA, she now ends her athletic career having been named twice to the team. In all four of her 5K races, she ran a time below 20 minutes, providing depth to an improved women's squad. Her best time of the season, 19:16, came at the Notre Dame Invitational. A speech pathology major with a 3.96 GPA in her first year of eligibility, Reinhart was one of four women in the MAC to earn both academic and first-team All-MAC honors this year. She led the team on the field, running under 18 minutes three times with four top-five 5K finishes. Her time of 17:57 at the Central Collegiate Championships made her the 10th fastest woman in Ohio women's cross country history. She even improved upon that time, finishing at 17:49 in the MAC Championships. At the Great Lakes Regional, she was 1.7 seconds away from earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships.
On the men's side, Ohio led the league with three honorees. A junior majoring in integrated language arts with a 3.45 GPA, Leon has been a major contributor to the men's team this year. His ninth-place finish at 25:37 helped the team win the Central Collegiate Championships. His best run of the season came at the Pre-Nationals where he ran 25:01.3. He took 18th at the MAC Championships and was the second fastest Bobcat at the Great Lakes Regional. A mechanical engineering major with a 3.60 GPA in his final season, List finished in the top-20 twice. His performances helped the men win the team title in both the Central Collegiate Championships and the Ohio Invitational. His season-best time was 25:38.1 in the Pre-Nationals. He also took 29th at the MAC Championships. A junior in academic standing majoring in accounting and finance with a 3.92 GPA, King contributed to the team's first Central Collegiate Championship since 1996 with a fourth-place finish at 25:20. He landed 14th at All-Ohio, and his best run came at the Pre-Nationals, when he finished with a run of 25:03. He took 35th at the MAC Championships. All five of the athletes have already begun practicing with the track & field team in preparation for the indoor season beginning in January. Leon, King and Reinhart will be returning next year for cross country. |
