ATHENS, Ohio – Junior forward Karynne Baker (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore midfielder Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) each scored two goals as the Ohio field hockey team (1-2) claimed its first victory of the season over Saint Louis (2-2), 4-1, today at Pruitt Field.
Friday's win marked the first for first-year head coach Ali Johnstone.
The Bobcats got out to a fast start, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Baker tallied Ohio's first goal of the match in the 5th minute, taking a feed from sophomore midfielder Annmarie Hoppel (Fredericksburg, Va.) and scoring a straight shot in front of the cage.
Ohio extended its lead to 2-0 in the 9th minute with an unassisted goal from Shive.
In the second half, the Bobcats scored early in the 36th minute with a shot from the right by Baker that bounced off the goalkeeper and into the cage. Shive assisted on Baker's goal.
Later in the match the Billikens got on the board in the 57th minute with an unassisted goal from freshman midfielder Emily Wastell. The Bobcats responded with their final goal in the 59th minute with Baker returning the favor by dishing out an assist to Shive who scored the goal.
Baker and Shive led Ohio's attack with two goals and two assists each. Sophomore midfielder Emma Spinetto (Louisville, Ky.) also tallied a shot on goal.
Senior Carly Kissinger led Saint Louis with three shots.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sophia Boothby (Spotsylvania, Va.) made three saves for the Bobcats while freshman goalkeeper Sasha Sander tallied two for the Bellikens. Boothby picked up her first win of the year.
Ohio will host the Liberty Flames this Sunday (Sept. 2; 1 p.m. EST) at Pruitt Field.
