WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior first baseman Jake Madsen had a game-high three hits to lead the Ohio University baseball team (2-3) to a 5-4 win over Liberty University Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field in the third game of the UNC-Wilmington Tournament.
Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) also scored a run and drove in a run to continue an impressive tournament run where he has batted .538, going 7-for-13.
Ohio also had strong offensive performances from senior Chandler Geller (Austin, Texas), junior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) as all three players turned in two-hit performances.
Freshman Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) picked up his first career win as he went 5.2 innings, struck out five and walked just three. Fellow Bobcat rookie came on to secure the save as he worked a perfect ninth inning.
The Bobcats wasted little time getting on the board as they plated four runs on three hits. Longo got the inning started as he collected his first career home run as he to right field.
Ohio would then load the bases in the frame following a single by Geller, a walk by Madsen and a walk by junior Taylor Emody (Milan, Ohio). Freshman Nick Bredeson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) would then drive in Geller and Madsen. Following Bredeson's RBI single Emody stole home to make the count 4-0.
The Bobcats would then add a run in second thanks to an RBI single by Madsen, which scored Geller from third. Geller got on base after he tripled down the right field line.
Ohio's 1-2-3-4 hitters combined to go 9-for-19 with a triple, a home run, four runs scored and two RBI.
Liberty fought back with two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, but were never able to overtake Ohio.
