CARY, N.C.Marck Paliotto worked 6.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs, but it was not enough as the Ohio University baseball team (1-6) dropped a 3-0 decision to the University> of Rhode Island Saturday afternoon at Coleman Field inside the USA Baseball Training Facility.
Paliotto (Columbus, Ohio) suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. In 6.1 innings of work, Paliotto gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked a pair. Rhode Island pitcher Mike Bradstreet earned the win after he tossed a complete game shutout, limiting the Bobcats to just two hits.
Ohio was held without a run for the third time this season.
Rhode Island got on the board in the second as it plated one run. The Rams were positioned to have a big inning as it loaded the bases, but Paliotto worked his way out of the jam as he got URI's Pat Fortunato to fly out to second base to end the threat.
In the third inning, Brad Przebieda (Lancaster, Ohio) led off the frame as he reached on a throwing error. Przebieda then advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by senior Dan Schmidt (Kamiak, Wash.), but the `Cats were unable to move the Ohio junior in to score.
URI would then increase its lead to 2-0 as Mike LeBel came into score following a single by Chase Livingston.
Ohio still did not have a hit heading into the seventh inning, but that all changed when sophomore Cody Gaertner (Allison Park, Pa.) led off the frame with a single into left centerfield. Gaertner would then move over to third, but the `Cats could not get the runner in to score.
URI added another run in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Bobcats would then be held to just one hit for the remainder of the game as the Rams picked up their first win on the year.
Ohio returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. and will take on Massachusetts to conclude play in the Irish Classic.
