ATHENS, Ohio - Sophomore Sean Kennedy posted a complete-game two hitter to lead the Ohio University baseball team (7-9) to a 10-1 victory over IPFW in game one of its doubleheader at Bob Wren Stadium.
Kennedy (Columbus, Ohio) faced 32 batters, struck out eight and walked only three to pickup up his second win on the year as he made his first start of the season.
Freshman Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way offensively for the Bobcats as he collected a team-best four hits and drove in a pair of RBI as he hit out of the cleanup position. Fellow freshman Logan Cozart (New Philadelphia, Ohio) also had a strong afternoon as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Senior Jensen Painter (Willshire, Oho) led the team by scoring three runs. He also went 2-for-4 and reached base for the 16th-consecutive game.
As a team, Ohio smacked out a season-high 17 hits and scored 10-or-more runs for the third time this season. Ohio has collected 10-or-more hits in six of its last seven games.
Ohio jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through the first three innings. The Bobcats plated one run in the first, one in the second and two in the third. Madsen drive in one run in the first and one in third, while senior Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) drove in one run in the second and junior Chandler Geller (Austin, Texas) drove in a run in third.
IPFW got on the board in the fourth to make the count 4-1, but that would be the only run it would score for the remainder of the game.
The Bobcats broke the game open in the seventh as it plated three runs to make the count 7-1. Ohio loaded the bases as each of its first three batters got on base, which set the table for Cozart. Cozart advanced the runners after he was hit by a pitch, which brought up freshman Cody Gaertner (Allison Park, Pa.), who singled to right field, giving Ohio a 6-1 lead. Two batters later junior Ben Otto (Menomonie, Wis.) drew a walk, which made the count 7-1.
Ohio added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to RBI from Cozart, freshman Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Ian Mezlak (Lorain, Ohio).
The Bobcats return to the diamond later this afternoon in game two against IPFW.
