ATHENS, Ohio - Senior Jason Moulton tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and struck out nine to lead the Ohio University baseball team (9-9) to a convincing 13-0 victory over IPFW Sunday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.
Moulton (Toledo, Ohio) picked up his first victory on the year and walked just one batter in the 29 he faced. Freshmen Marck Paliotto (Columbus, Ohio) and Tyler Plys (Parma, Ohio) also pitched one scoreless inning apiece as Ohio earned its first shutout of the season.
Ohio's 1-2-3 proved to be the difference offensively for the Bobcats as they combined to go 7-for-14 with four RBI. Senior Captain Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) led the way offensively with a team-best three hits and three runs scored. Newton also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Senior Jensen Painter (Willshire, Ohio), and freshmen Logan Cozart (New Philadelphia, Ohio) and Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) all collected a pair of hits. Cozart and junior Seth Streich (Ridgeway, Pa.) both hit their second home runs on the year.
Painter's 2-for-3 afternoon marked the 18th-consecutive game in which he had reached base safely.
Ohio jumped out to the early lead as it plated two runs in the first, two in the second and three in third to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead and never looked back.
As a team Ohio smacked out 14 hits, which marked the sixth-consecutive game Ohio has collected 10-or-more hits.
Ohio returns to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Bob Wren Stadium where it will take on Marshall.
