ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University Baseball team dropped game one of its weekend series to Toledo by a final score of 8-5 Friday night at Bob Wren Stadium.
Freshman right-hander Jake Miller (Westerville, Ohio) received his fourth loss of the season. He worked 5.1 innings with a strikeout, two walks and six earned runs.
Senior shortstop Dan Schmidt (Lynnwood, Wash.) and freshman second baseman Nate Squires (Plain City, Ohio) led the way offensively as they both recorded a pair of hits. Nate Squires also scored two runs, while Schmidt had two RBI.
Sophomore centerfielder Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) also chipped in offensively as he went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. With his single, Wells also got on base for the 12th-consecutive game.
Toledo started the scoring in the top of the second as it plated two runs in the inning. Anthony Smith singled to right field to start the inning, he then moved to second off a single to right by Wes White. Both advanced a base following a fielding error by senior third baseman Ben Otto (Menomonie, Wis.). Smith scored and White moved to third after Nate Langhals grounded out to first. White would then come into score after a groundout by Deion Tansel to give the Rockets a 2-0 lead.
Ohio tied the score in the bottom of the second a two apiece. Junior leftfielder Scott White (Springboro, Ohio) opened the inning with a walk. White then stole second, and then scored off a single to center field by senior designated hitter J.R Reynolds (Cincinnati, Ohio). Reynolds moved to second on the single and came home after an error by the second baseman that also put Nate Squires on second.
The Rockets regained the lead 3-2 in the top of the fifth. A two-out throwing error by Otto put UT's James Miglin on first. He would later move to second off a single through the left side by Smith and then scored off a single up the middle by White.
The Bobcats tied the score again in the bottom of the fifth at three apiece. Nate Squires singled up the middle with two outs and then made it to third on a single to right center by Schmidt. Nate Squires came into score on a double steal to even the count.
Toledo rallied with four more runs in the sixth to take the lead 7-3. Rockets brought in another run in the seventh to increase the lead to 8-3.
'Cats cut into the lead 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two runs of their own. Wells opened the inning with a single to right center. He then advanced to second with a two-out single to the left side by Nate Squires. Schmidt then doubled down the left field line to plate Nate Squires and Wells.
Sophomore lefty pitcher Logan Cozart (New Philadelphia, Ohio) dominated the eighth for the 'Cats as he struck out the side in order. Senior right-handed Brett Barber (Hurricane, W.V.) continued the strong pitching in the ninth as he got the third out with men on the corners to keep the score 8-5 going into the home half of the ninth.
Ohio will face off against tomorrow with a double header to end the three-game series. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
