TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior pitcher Brent Choban went the distance and struck out eight to lead the Ohio University baseball team (10-10) to a convincing 9-3 victory over Toledo Friday afternoon at Scott Park.
Choban (Rittman, Ohio) scattered 11 hits against the 39 batters he faced and allowed three earned runs en route to picking up his third win of the year.
Offensively, the Bobcats collected 14 hits seven hits for the seventh time in their last eight games. Senior captain Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.), freshman Logan Cozart (New Philadelphia, Ohio), sophomore Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio), sophomore Ian Mezlak (Lorain, Ohio) and freshman Cody Gaertner (Allison Park, Pa.) all collected a pair of hits.
Freshman Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Jensen Painter (Willshire, Ohio) also collected hits to extend their respective streaks. Madsen extended his hitting streak to 13 games, while Painter got on base for the 20th-consecutive game.
The Bobcats' 6-7-8 hitter combined to 6-for-14 with five RBI.
Ohio fell behind early as Toledo scored three runs on six hits in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats responded in the third as it took the lead for good as it plated six runs on six hits in the third. Mezlak highlighted the frame as he drove in pair of runs thanks to a single up the middle, which scored sophomore Kyle Dean (Athens, Ohio) and Madsen.
Ohio went on to add one run in the sixth and two in the eighth to secure the win.
Game two of the three-game series begins tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Sophomore Sean Kennedy (Columbus, Ohio) will get the start for Ohio.
