April 1, 2007

Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio - Freshman Marc Krauss hit his fifth home run in the last four games and senior Dusty Hammond hit a solo home run but the Bobcats fell in the series finale to Toledo, 18-6, Sunday in Bob Wren Stadium.

"Toledo was a much better team than we were this weekend," Head Coach Joe Carbone said. "We had to go to our bullpen right away and we just could not get anybody out. In the batter's box were are still not being as aggressive as we would like to be."

The 18-run outburst by Toledo (10-10, 3-3) featured a five-run third inning and a nine-run seventh inning. The Bobcats (9-14, 0-6) have now lost eight contests in a row. Ohio finished with six runs on 11 hits and three errors while the Rockets posted 18 runs on 19 hits and two errors. The Bobcats stranded 11 men on base while Toledo left 10 men aboard.

Senior Dan Weiss (Cincinnati, Ohio) took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the season. He threw 2.2 innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs. The Bobcats used eight pitchers in the contest. Jeff Cinadr earned the win for the Rockets to move to 2-0 on the season with 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.

Krauss (Deshler, Ohio) finished the game 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. His eighth inning solo home run was his fifth big fly in the past four games. Hammond (Bellefontaine, Ohio) finished 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Junior Matt Stiffler (Bellbrook, Ohio) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Drew Hoisington led the Rockets with a 2-for-6 day as he tallied six RBI and three runs scored. Sean Boley was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Jake Oester was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

As was the case in the first two games of the series, the Rockets got on the board first again Sunday with five runs in the third inning. Weiss allowed just one hit through the first two frames but ran into trouble in the third. Boley, Oester and Jake Swint opened the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases and Hoisington drove them all in with a three-run double down the left field line. He scored two batters later on a wild pitch and the Rockets scored their final run of the inning on a Bobcat error for a 5-0 lead.

The Rockets extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with an unearned run. Scott Boley drove the run in with an RBI single. Ohio answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Willie Walker (Marysville, Ohio) drilled a double to right field to open the inning and moved to third on a single by senior Bryant Witt (Powell, Ohio). Walker scored on an RBI fielder's choice and the Bobcats loaded the bases on a single by sophomore Hayden Johnston (Strattanville, Pa.) and a walk by sophomore Kirk Payne (Hilliard, Ohio) but could not plate any of the runners. Sophomore Brandon Besl (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a 1-0 pitch sharply but right at the Toledo shortstop, who started an inning-ending double play.

The Rockets tacked on two more in the sixth on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly for an 8-1 lead. Things fell apart for the Bobcats in the seventh as Toledo scored nine runs on seven hits to put the game out of reach. Ohio used four pitchers in the inning as the Rockets took a 17-1 lead. A Hoisington solo home run in the eighth made it 18-1.

The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the eighth when Hammond and Krauss hit back-to-back solo home runs. Ohio added three more in the ninth on RBI singles by Besl and Krauss and an RBI groundout by junior Jason Selhorst (Ottawa, Ohio), but the end result was an 18-6 Toledo won.

Ohio heads back to non-conference road action Tuesday with a match up at Xavier. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
