ATHENS, Ohio - Freshman center fielder Nick Squires led the Ohio University baseball team (7-26, 3-8) Saturday with two hits and three runs scored, but it was not enough as the Bobcats were defeated 11-8 by the University of Akron Zips in game two of the weekend series in ten innings.

Ohio's extra inning affair marked the second straight game in which the Bobcats had gone into extra frames to decide a game. The Bobcats have now dropped six league games by an average of just two runs.

Senior left-hander Marck Paliotto (Columbus, Ohio) worked five innings, gave up five runs - four of which were earned and struck out three. Senior righty Brett Barber (Hurricane, W.Va.) received the loss after worked one inning, giving up three runs, two walks and struck out two.

Akron scored early with two runs in the first inning, but Ohio cut into the lead in its half of the inning as sophomore left fielder Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) scored freshman center fielder Nick Squires (Plain City, Ohio) with a RBI groundout. Nick Squires reached base with a single up the middle, moved to second by a single up the middle by junior right fielder Scott White (Springboro, Ohio) and moved to third off a double steal.

The Zips added two more in the third off a pair hits to take a 4-1 advantage. Ohio showed strong defense in the fifth despite giving up a run (5-1) as they ended the inning with a 4-6-3 double play that stranded a man at third.

Akron tacked on another run (6-1) in the sixth, but Ohio responded in the bottom half of the frame as it tied the game with five runs on four hits. All of Ohio's runs in the frame were scored with two outs. Senior Dan Schmidt (Lynnwood, Wash.) got the scoring going as he hit a bases loaded ground rule double in to left center field. Two batters later, Nate Squires (Plain City, Ohio) drilled a two run single into left field, which drove in sophomore Cody Gaertner (Allison Park, Pa.) and Schmidt. Senior Ben Otto (Menomonie, Wis.) followed with a single up the middle, which plated senior J.R. Reynolds (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Nate Squires extended his on-base streak to 12 games after he finished the afternoon, going 3-for-5 at the plate.

The Zips broke the tie in the eighth (7-6) with a leadoff solo shot over the right field wall by Matt Larocca. Akron would add on another in the inning to extend the lead to 8-6, but would get nothing more as they left three men on base.

The Bobcats answered again in the eighth with two runs of their own to tie the score at eight. Sophomore first baseman Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) singled up the middle to score Nick Squires from second, who reached on a single to the shortstop and Otto, who reached on a walk.

Akron threatened in the ninth with two men in scoring position, but Barber was able to strike out the final man to end the inning unscathed as the Zips left a pair of runners on base. Akron stranded 13 runners on base for the game.

The Zips took the lead (9-8) in the tenth with a bases loaded walk. Akron would then score two more in the frame to extend the lead to three (11-8). In the bottom of the 10th,
