RICHMOND, Ky. - The Ohio University baseball team (22-18) had its four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night as it dropped a 12-1 decision at Eastern Kentucky. The Bobcats' setback was just their third road loss since March 25.
Senior Shane Dedig (Albuquerque, N.M.) suffered the loss after he worked just 0.2 innings in what was his shortest outing of the year.
Ohio also had pitching appearances from senior Shane Cole (Oakville, Ontario), sophomore Shane Henkel (Irwin, Pa.), junior Marck Paliotto (Columbus, Ohio), Tyler Backstrom (Columbus, Ohio) and Tyler Stage (Grove City, Ohio).
As a team, Ohio managed just six hits. Senior captain Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) led the way offensively as he had two hits and one RBI, driving freshman Ian Mezlak (Lorain, Ohio) in the fifth inning.
Fellow senior Jensen Painter (Willshire, Ohio) drew a walk in the fourth inning as he got on base for the 40th-consecutive game.
Eastern Kentucky never trailed as it plated seven runs on eight hits in the first inning. The Colonels would then add a pair of runs in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the eighth as the Bobcats suffered their worst loss of the year. Eastern Kentucky finished the night with 18 hits.
Ohio returns to action Friday against Bowling Green as it opens up a three-game league series at Bowling Green. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
